Welcome to my first profile page (on Github Pages). This is a profile in the making, so keep your eyes open for what’s to come!

I am a PhD student at the University of Edinburgh, funded by Medical Research Scotland. I am also an Enrichment Student at the Alan Turing Institute. I want to bring love into academia, into the work that I do. This means I want to create spaces where, in the words of bell hooks, we can be open and honestly express care, affection, responsibility, respect, commitment and trust.

Soy estudiante de doctorado en la Universidad de Edimburgo, financiado por Medical Research Scotland. También soy estudiante del “Enrichment Scheme” en el Instituto Alan Turing. Quiero traer amor a la academia, al trabajo que hago. About my work/ Acerca de mi trabajo

I started my PhD in order to better understand how memory works inside our brains. In order to do so, I simplify the complex mechanisms of memory and create computer models of molecular interactions that can help predict how molecules are working inside neurons.

As time went by I started to become more and more aware that in order to create meaningful work, it needs to challenge the colonizing mindset of research. This is, there is a need to move away from historically white, cis-male, centered science, to a science that is much more inclusive and accessible, and moves away from the imperialist white supermacist patriarchal culture we live in.

Hopefully you will be able to see through the projects listed below, that reproducibility and bias in science are huge driving forces of how I work. Making reproducible science means a bit more time is needed at the beginning, but in the long run money, time and resources are saved by not repeating the same research over and over again. Similarly, I see no point in creating amazingly reproducible research, if this is carrying sexist, racist, ableist, speciesist or any kind of oppressive bias that continues to disproportionately affect some individuals more than others.

As an emotional human, I also very much care about the environment (not as separate from humans), and the intersectional impacts of the current climate crisis. I see all parts of my life as inter-connected, not as isolated sections. I work and live to create a new vision of what the world can be.

Comencé mi doctorado para comprender mejor cómo funciona la memoria dentro de nuestro cerebro. Para hacerlo, simplifico los complejos mecanismos de la memoria y creo modelos informáticos de interacciones moleculares que pueden ayudar a predecir cómo funcionan las moléculas dentro de las neuronas.

A medida que pasaba el tiempo, comencé a ser cada vez más consciente de que, para crear un trabajo significativo, es necesario desafiar la mentalidad colonizadora de la investigación. Es decir, existe la necesidad de alejarse de la ciencia históricamente blanca y cis-masculina, a una ciencia que sea mucho más inclusiva y accesible, y que se aleje de la cultura patriarcal supermacista blanca imperialista en la que vivimos.

Con suerte, podrá ver a través de los proyectos que se enumeran a continuación, que la reproducibilidad y el sesgo en la ciencia son grandes fuerzas impulsoras de mi forma de trabajar. Hacer ciencia reproducible significa que se necesita un poco más de tiempo al principio, pero a la larga se ahorra dinero, tiempo y recursos al no repetir la misma investigación una y otra vez. Del mismo modo, no veo ningún sentido en la creación de una investigación maravillosament reproducible, si esto conlleva sexismo, racismo, capacitismo, especismo o cualquier tipo de sesgo opresivo que continúa afectando desproporcionadamente a algunes individues más que a otres.

Como ser humana emocional, también me preocupo mucho por el medio ambiente (no como algo separado de les humanes) y los impactos interseccionales de la crisis climática actual. Veo todas las partes de mi vida como interconectadas, no como secciones aisladas. Trabajo y vivo para crear una nueva visión de lo que puede ser el mundo.
